World Suicide Prevention Day – 10 September, 2023 at SRM

The World Suicide Prevention Day, i.e. 10 September each year is marked so as to throw light on the large number of people who end their life by suicide.

On September 11, the day started with the display of the posters and charts depicting Suicide prevention and this year’s WHO Theme – “Creating Hope Through Action” – made by CRRIs and the nursing students in SRM Hospital lobby, to inculcate awareness among the general public about suicide, their identification of warning signs and emphasis upon the need for the professional help. On the same day Pamphlets having information about suicide and its prevention, in both English and Tamil were distributed within the hospital Premises.

On September 12th, the main event was organised in SRM Hospital Seminar hall from 11am onwards starting with Tamil Thai Vazhthu and the Lightening Ceremony. The respected Dignitaries were felicitated and were requested to occupy the Dias. They then distributed the Prizes for the winners of the competitions held prior. Dr. Salma, Second year Postgraduate went on to give her introductory speech of the program. This was then followed by the welcome
address by Dr. Arul Saravanan, Professor and HOD of Department of Psychiatry. Our esteemed Dean, Dr. Nithin. M. Nagarkar delivered the Inaugural speech. The highlight of the day was a Role play by the Masters in Social Work students, enlightening about the scenarios involved in suicide and thereby its prevention. The chief guest Dr. Ramya Sampath, Consultant Psychiatrist, MGM Health Care & Poorna Mind Care delivered an interactive and an elaborative talk on Suicide awareness.
