Dr. Arul Saravanan Ramachandran was born in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, India. He is a native of Alakudi village (on the banks of River Kollidam), Sirkazhi taluk of Mayiladuthurai district. He did his schooling at St. John’s Senior Secondary School and later at Santhome Higher Secondary School at Chennai. Graduated M.B.B.S., from PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre. He received his Post Graduate training from the Institute of Mental Health (I.M.H.), Kilpauk -attached to the Madras Medical College, Chennai, India. Finished his D.P.M. there and later completed his M.D. Psychiatry from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka. During DPM training, at the I.M.H., he had exposure to Institutional Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. During MD training, he had unique exposure in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Community Psychiatry, with special emphasis on Alcohol and Substance use disorders. He served both in the mental hospital set up as well general hospital set up. He has vast experience in Mental Health, Psychiatry, Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work, with special interest in Indian Forensic Psychiatry. He is currently working at the SRM Medical College & Research Centre, Chengalpattu District. He has written a chapter on ‘Forensic aspects of Mood Disorders’ in the book ‘ Mood Disorder Today’, apart from many research articles in indexed journals. He is a peer reviewer of many indexed journals at National and International level. His areas of interest are Phenomenology, Mood Disorders, Insight, Medical Education and Psychiatric Research.
He has more than 17 years of experience in the field. He has attended, participated, presented papers at national, and international conferences. He has organized conferences at regional level, for the Indian Psychiatric Society, including ‘TANPSYCON 2015’.
Currently, he is Professor and HOD, Department of Psychiatry, SRM Medical College and Research Centre attached to SRM IST (Deemed to be University), Chengalpattu District, India. He is an examiner for various Universities in India, including the T.N. Dr. MGR Medical University, Pondicherry University, Bangalore University, Manipal University (MAHE), Meenakshi University (MAHER), etc. He is also an assessor for the National Board of Examinations for Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
He is a Life Fellow of the Indian Psychiatric Society, the SOUTH ZONE IPS and Life Member of Tamil Nadu IPS. He is an Executive Member of the ‘Chennai Psychiatric Society’. He is also the Associate Editor of the CPS-News Letter. He is also the current Executive Committee member of TN – IPS (2021-22).
